Azenta - Central chilled water plant with dynamic free cooling in Griesheim

Azenta is a global leader in integrated solutions for life science and biotechnology. As part of the constantly growing demands for sustainability and energy efficiency, Azenta realised a modern chilled water centre at its Griesheim site in 2023 together with Refolution Industriekälte GmbH.
The system was designed and implemented with a focus on energy savings, operational reliability and future viability. At its centre are two SECON KRONOS WDP-B-665.S-I2-SN-OD propane-water/water chillers, each with a cooling capacity of 100 kW. These highly efficient, water-cooled machines work with the natural refrigerant R290 (propane) and fulfil the highest environmental and safety standards. (including the F-Gas Regulation and REACH)

Sliding free cooling

The sliding integration of free cooling is particularly innovative: free cooling can start proportionally even at outside temperatures below +14 °C. If the temperature drops further below +4 °C, the cooling is generated completely freely - the compressors can be switched off. This significantly reduces energy consumption and operation is virtually CO₂-neutral.

Sustainable heat recovery

The refrigeration system also has an integrated waste heat utilisation system that can be used to supply a heating network in the future. This means that the waste heat generated in the process can be utilised efficiently in terms of energy - an important step towards further reducing primary energy consumption and complying with international environmental standards.

Hydraulic concept & control

The hydraulics are realised via the Swiss circuit in the flow, so that the lowest cold water temperature does not mix with the return flow. This ensures a constant supply to the consumers at the optimum temperature. The redundancy and safety concept was planned and documented by Refolution.

Key technical data

  • Refrigeration capacity: 2 × 100 kW
  • Refrigerant: R290 (propane)
  • Cold water side: 14 / 8 °C
  • Heat transfer medium: Ethylene glycol 30 %EER (without pumps): 3.15
  • SEPR value (ENER Lot 21): 7.97
  • Safety concept: ATEX version with propane sensor, sealed safety valves
  • Manufacturer of the chillers: SECON GmbHPlant manufacturer: Helmut Herbert GmbH & Co.

The project at Azenta impressively demonstrates how modern refrigeration technology and sustainability go hand in hand. Thanks to the interplay of dynamic free cooling, efficient heat recovery and redundant design, the system offers maximum energy efficiency with maximum operational reliability - and sets new standards for sustainable refrigeration supply in biotechnology.
