Description of the RefoBlast

Blood plasma can be used in a variety of ways after donation and forms the basis for various life-saving medicines or can be transfused directly. In order to maintain the quality and effectiveness of the blood plasma, it must be frozen quickly and in a controlled manner before storage.

The RefoBlast was developed precisely for this task. The RefoBlast is a sustainable rapid freezer that can cool blood plasma bags and bottles to a core temperature of -25 °C with maximum efficiency. The RefoBlast has minimal space and service requirements and is also free from environmental regulations due to the refrigerant used.

A RefoBlast has two independent freezer rooms, each with a refrigeration machine. The machines use the natural refrigerant propane (R290) and are not affected by the phase-down via the EU F-Gas Regulation and the possible PFAS regulation via REACH. Due to the small amount of propane per hermetically sealed refrigerant circuit, the RefoBlast is also not subject to any other safety requirements and installation conditions.

The compact design of the RefoBlast allows it to be accommodated in a footprint of less than 5 square metres, including the service area and door opening. Several freezers can be placed directly next to each other for easy scaling for larger donation centres. The air-cooled machines do not require cooling water; temperature control of the installation room is sufficient. This is easier to implement than a separate cold water supply, especially in rented premises. If a cold water supply is available, the RefoBlast can be ordered as a water-cooled version, also to utilise the waste heat for heating purposes.

To make servicing easier, all installed components, such as the chillers, can be replaced as simple modules on site without the need for specialised refrigeration personnel. Replaced units are repaired by the manufacturer.</p

The RefoBlast thus sets new standards in blood plasma freezing.

Structure & freezing performance

The RefoBlast has two independent freezing chambers, each with a refrigeration machine. For freezing blood plasma, the RefoBlast is designed for blood plasma bottles and bags with a maximum of 850 ml. Approx. 25 kg of product can be brought to a core temperature of -25 °C in 4 h per freezing chamber and batch. This corresponds to 30 bags/bottles of 850 ml each. By varying the load the freezing time can be shortened or the product quantity increased.

Installation & minimum space requirement

Ultra-compact with a minimum footprint of less than 5 square metres including service area and door opening. The freezer cells can be placed directly next to each other without any space between them to flexibly increase the freezing capacity as required.</p

The small filling quantity of R290 in the hermetic refrigerant circuits allows flexible installation without safety requirements. The air-cooled machines do not require cooling water, only the installation room needs to be tempered.


Freezing technology & simple service

Thanks to the refrigerant propane (R290), the freezer is environmentally friendly and there are no current or future restrictions due to the EU F-Gas Regulation and the REACH PFAS regulation.

The chillers can be replaced as simple modules on site without the need for specialised refrigeration personnel. Replaced chillers can be repaired by the manufacturer or specialised refrigeration companies.

Energy efficiency

The RefoBlast sets new standards in efficiency thanks to the efficient refrigerant, the high-quality insulation with 160 mm PU foam panels and the minimised surface area. The low energy requirement of the chillers leads to low operating costs.

Freezable products

  • Plasma bag

    The RefoBlast is designed for blood plasma bags with a product volume of 850 ml.

    Up to 30 bags can be distributed across the trays. A very high air exchange rate ensures that each bag is frozen homogeneously and quickly.

  • Plasma bottles

    The same shelving system can also be used to place blood plasma bottles with 850 ml vertically using only 2 trays.

    Up to 40 bottles can be distributed across the two 450 mm by 600 mm trays . By reducing the number of bottles, the freezing time can be shortened.

  • Flexible shelving system

    The flexible shelving system in the 160 litre (net) freezer compartment allows many other products to be frozen. From high-quality foods such as blueberries, which are shock-frozen immediately after harvesting, to cold packs for the last mile of delivery services.
