Refolution of steel hardening

High Performance Low temperature Steel hardening system energetically optimised for minimum operating costs in the temperature range down to -140 °C.

Introduction Refosteel -80 °C steel hardening plant

Treatment of steel after hardening at cryogenic temperatures leads to greater hardness and wear resistance, as a higher proportion of austenite can be converted into martensite. The cryogenic treatment of steel takes place at -70 °C to -120 °C for a period of one hour and leads to a conversion of residual austenite into martensite, a higher hardness and improved dimensional stability. The cold treatment is mainly carried out with liquid nitrogen. The nitrogen consumption is considerable and leads to high operating costs.

We have developed a new concept for a quick cooling chamber that uses only air as a refrigerant for temperatures between -40 °C and -120 °C with the cold air machine from Mirai Intex. In cryogenic steel hardening, the cooling chamber consists of two rooms separated by a permeable barrier so that two different batches can be hardened in one machine. Before another batch is cooled down to the required temperature using the cold air chiller, a heat exchange takes place between the warm new batch and the already cold finished batch. This saves some of the cooling capacity required for cooling and further reduces operating costs. Our solution is more efficient than existing technologies across a wide temperature range. As only air is used as a refrigerant, it is also free of regulations, safe for the environment and requires little maintenance.

Properties

When hardening steel, components are usually quenched to -80°C and then reheated to +100°C. This enables a particularly high level of hardness, which is required for many components such as camshafts, gear wheels, razor blades, ammunition, etc.

The system is able to cool these components to extremely low temperatures. Thanks to the double door principle, a large proportion of the energy in a batch can be recovered. The first batch is introduced through the first door and cooled to -80 °C, for example. The batch then remains in the system and the next batch is loaded via the second door. Before the refrigeration system starts cooling the new warm batch, the energy between the batches is equalised.

Retempering the chamber for subsequent heat treatment does not take place in the Refosteel but in a separate oven. This saves a considerable amount of energy, as the tempering of an entire chamber requires a lot of energy.

The integrated cold air cooling technology from Mirai Intex enables infinitely adjustable temperatures, a fast cooling rate and a high level of efficiency. With air as the refrigerant, the system has a low CO2 footprint and is not subject to any current or future regulations regarding the use of refrigerants.

A real all-rounder!

Technical details of the steel hardening system

  • Insulating cell to the highest industry standard

The chamber consists of sturdy insulating panels with impact protection and is mounted on a mobile base frame.

  • Future-proof refrigeration technology

The refrigeration technology used is efficient cold air refrigeration technology from Mirai Intex. This is oil-free, low-vibration and uses air as a refrigerant. As a result, it is free from refrigerant regulations and the speed-controlled turbo compressor allows flexible temperature settings down to -140 °C. In addition, a high cooling rate can be realised if required.

  • Integrated industrial control

Our systems come with an industrial control system from Siemens including operating panel, LED lamps and acoustic signalling device. This enables the system to be operated quickly and easily. The system operator is informed about the status of the system via the signal lights and can also intervene manually in the process at the operating panel via the authorisation levels.

Reliable, durable, efficient and safe for people and the environment!

Technical design of the steel hardening system

  • Double door system for energy recovery

Thanks to the separation of the cold and hot oven and the double chamber system, the energy from previous batches can be recovered and used to pre-cool the next batch. This can save up to 60% energy.

  • No defrosting thanks to Snow Catcher

The system design of the cold air chiller from Mirai Intex utilises the air in the chamber as the refrigerant. The chamber is cooled by extracting heated air, which is then reintroduced via the Mirai Intex "Snow Catcher" after cooling. The system enables a continuous process without defrosting and impresses with its high temperature stability.

  • Low temperature ceiling fan

A ceiling fan specially developed for this application ensures a high circulation rate in the chamber and optimum temperature distribution.
